Motivational Monday: Do It Out of Spite

Have you always wanted to do something, but never had anyone encourage you toward that goal? Have you found yourself feeling as if that goal is something you’ll never reach – that maybe there’s something about you that is insufficient to reach it?

Being encouraged is wonderful, and can often help us take that next, difficult step.

But if that goal is one you must have to feel fulfilled, there’s another way to motivate yourself toward it. Do it out of absolute spite. Do it to show all those people who discourage you just how wrong they are.

As children, we often get that sense of taking action out of spite. “I’ll show you!” and away we ran to do whatever thing it was we were told we couldn’t do. Personally, I was known for this one from a very young age. It led to everyone being afraid to say I couldn’t do something because I’d do it just to prove them wrong!

Even now, there are people who don’t speak against my goals because they know they’ll spark that “Oh yeah? Well, just you watch!” (This is not “Hold my beer.” That is reserved for people about to do stupid things that are going to end badly.)

The benefit you get out of using a sense of indignation to drive your goals is that you prove to yourself that you can do it. You prove to everyone else that you can, too. You also gain in strength and confidence with each success.

So do it. Get indignant. That negativity has no right to be directed at you. Scoff, roll up your sleeves, and go after that goal.

Besides, it’s fun to stand at the goal and smirk at everyone who said you couldn’t do it. Just be careful. It’s an addictive feeling. You’ll be looking for more goals in no time.
