Self-Care Saturday: Appreciate Yourself

Have you ever faced a setback or a disappointment and found yourself feeling like you’ll never achieve what you want? It’s a terrible feeling, isn’t it? Worse, it doesn’t seem to matter whether it’s a new job, a chance to do something fun, or something dear to your heart like finding love. When life hands you lemons, it isn’t fun and making lemonade is not as easy as people think.

In the moments when you’re feeling defeated, step back from what is going on around you and appreciate yourself. There are a few ways to do this.

  • Think about the things you’ve done well in the past week. It doesn’t have to be anything important or exceptional, only something you’ve done well. Congratulate yourself on a job well done.
  • List out your skills. Include job, social, personal, and so on. For you ladies who wear gorgeous makeup and fix your hair every day; that is a skill. I know it is because I don’t have it! Read over that list and give yourself a moment of feeling impressed at all the things you can do.
  • Consider your achievements and what it was within you that enabled you to accomplish them. List out those things and applaud yourself. Having willpower, strength of spirit, and not giving up are worth applause.

If you appreciate yourself, those moments when you face resistance to reaching your goals will be far less impactful. It also builds your internal strength so you have what you need to face your next challenge.

And for what it’s worth, I believe in you.
